Austin Culinary Tour

I always remember seeing information about Austin in Southern Living, much of which is restaurants or foodie places to try. I never pay too much attention since I am rarely in Austin, but before this past trip for David's conference, I did some research on their website. I do not think we ate anywhere that was not recommended by Southern Living besides our free hotel breakfast (and David's meeting food). I, of course, did not pick any really fine dining places so everything was good prices!

Apparently, Austin is know for its food trailers. Who knew? I found the top 5 food trailers in Austin on Southern Living, and we tried 3 of them. I LOVE food trailers now, but some others of them I am just not sure I would trust. Each one has some unique specialty, and that is usually the only thing they sell. Often they travel around, but it seemed that most of them stayed put often in a group.

Magnolia Cafe on Friday night- Southern Diner type food but with a modern twist.
The waitstaff was not your classic Southern people either but more tatoos and piercings. I had a hummadilla (hummus quesadilla with black beans, avocado, pico, and lettuce), David had the special (apple-citrus pork chop, scalloped potatoes, and green beans- it was one of the most moist, flavorful pork chops ever and the potatoes were to die for), and Brieleigh got her only kids meal on the trip: grilled chicken (with home fried potatoes). YUM!

Trailer #1- Flip Happy Crepes for Saturday lunch
David had already eaten lunch at his meeting, but Brieleigh and I were starving after a long day at the Children's Museum and getting stuck in the parking garage. I got a meal type crepe and David got a dessert one. As you can see, many of the trailers have seating (and music) right there outside the trailer.

Lemon Curd crepe with blueberry sauce and powdered sugar and a Ham and Gruyere crepe with green onions.
Very tasty!

Threadgills- a more typical Southern restaurant.
David had pecan crusted chicken with giant lima beans and fried okra, and I had a vegetable plate- garlic cheese grits, green beans, steamed asparagus, san antonio squash (squash casserole with chiles), and broccoli and rice casserole. All was served with hot rolls and mexican cornbread. The vegetables were our favorite!- all except for the green beans which were not Southern style, but fresh (which I usually like but these were chewy and rubbery and bland).
Again, and very delicious choice!

Trailer #2- Mmmpanadas for Sunday lunch
Fresh empanadas with fun fillings. It was located by Mueller Hanger which is an old airport hanger made during a war (I think) so it was made out of all wood instead of metal. Pretty cool!

Barbeque beef (with beans) empanada and asparagus, prosciutto, and blue cheese emanada (my favorite!).
Not pictured: peach cobbler empanada. Yum-o!

Trailer #3- Gordoughs for Sunday dessert on the right home.
They serve big fat dounts with various fillings and toppings, some savory with meat and some sweet. You have to wait a few minutes because they cook the fresh hot donut dough and they dress it to order. Thankfully the donut dough was not too sweet which made it much easier to eat.

David's Mama's Cake: a donut with vanilla cake batter and chocolate fudge. Delicious!

Jamey's Chocolate Dream (or something like that): a donut filling and covered with chocolate icing, chocolate chips, brownie batter, and brownie bites. Need I say rich? But scrumptious!
We ate a few bites of each dount, then enjoyed them again at least 3 more times!
